THE BURIAL CEREMONY AT IGARRA, EDO STATE

Although the actual burial was on 20th May, 2017, the activities for the ceremony started a day before, precisely by 2:00pm where I had to record the slaughtering of the cow. Initially, I wondered how they would bring down a full grown live cow with big horns. The boys for the job were quite experienced. There was a long rope tied to the right hind leg of the cow. With this, they tried to put the same rope through the second left  hind leg. The cow, perhaps knowing the intentions of the boys, resisted, and frequently threw back kicks to the presumed enemies.

THE WHITE WEDDING AT UWAN, NIFOR, BENIN CITY

The wedding took place on the 13th May,2017. I remember vividly the activities that led up to the actual event. Before that day, I had resolved to leave my house at Ugbighoko by 6:am so as to arrive at the venue early enough. However, at about 5:20am, I received a call from the groom reminding me to arrive at the venue as early as possible in other to shoot the cooking process. This made me wonder why people attached so much importance to this.

THE TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE AT ALISIMIE, DELTA STATE

The day was 10th May, 2017. As the official  photographer for the event, I was pre-informed about it. On that date, I put all my necessary equipment  together. We left Benin at 11:00am as a convoy to the venue where the bride, family and well wishers waited patiently for our arrival. Soon thereafter, we arrived there, and were warmly welcomed. There were some guests sitting quietly outside the  house.

Before going inside the house, I observed the serene environment. The village comprised mainly of mud houses. I saw electric poles an indication of electricity in the area. Most of the roads are tarred.

I brought out my video camera and took a few shots before going inside. Chairs were neatly arrange in the parlour to accommodate the  brides and grooms family. In the inner room, the bride was been given a make over. I took permission to go in and see her to take some shots. She looked gorgeous and amazingly beautiful in every way.

About 20mins later, the official ceremony started. The spokesperson for the brides family joyfully welcomed one and all. Kola nuts were offered in a clean bowl with some amount of money to support it. on a lighter note, the spokesperson sought to know the reason for the visit. A response came quickly from the representative of the grooms family. Thereafter, all the items brought, as required, were checked  on the list for compliance. The payment of the brideprice soon followed without hesitation.

Without wasting time, two veiled girls posed as the bride were brought in one after the other, but were quickly rejected. Later the true bride was unveiled to the admiration of everyone. Having satisfied all the necessary requirements, the newly wedded couple went outside amid cheers and acknowledgement from invited guests. The DJ played some melodious tunes which provoked a spontaneous dance steps from the couple and others.

At about 4:45pm the event winded up and we left Alisimie for Benin. Indeed, it was a great happy and successful occasion. The white wedding was slated for 13th May, 2017.

MUSIC- HOW IT CAN HEAL YOU

Music appeals to the soul. The medicinal value of music has been recognized ages ago. In the Bible, we learn of how David was hired to play music for king Saul to chase away the evil spirit tormenting him. Once David played the strings for him. He would feel relaxed. Today, music is known for its ability to affect mood, trigger memories and foster loving associations. Classical and baroque music, in particular, can help you to tap into your own innate ability to heal your heart.

For this reason, many healthcare practitioners have begun turning to the power of music. They know that the melody, pitch, timing and beat of music can alter a patient’s state of being by quieting his body and calms his spirit. “No question about it, music is a very powerful way to connect the mind and the body. And when they are connected, the real process of healing begins”, says Stephen Sinatro M.D., a Cardiologist at New England Heart and Longevity Center in Manchester.  “Music can be like meditation” explains Sinatro. “Some people who practice Yoga, for instance, will put on soft music. Massage therapists will always put on music. In fact, such cool music can have a favourable influence on your blood pressure. That means lowering your blood pressure. Indeed, research shows that music can help lower heart beat and blood pressure by reducing the stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol.
