It was a traditional marriage that took place at
Ogbebuya, Tradefair, Benin City, on 24th June, 2017. I was the official videographer. In the morning
of that blissful day, I assembled my equipments and headed straight to the
venue in other to capture the cooking process as well as the dressing of the
bride.
It was in this marriage that I witnessed a twist of
events. The events did not develop according to the assumed conventional
procedure. Right in the sitting room where the brideprice would be paid, the deviation from the norm took place. As both
the family of bride and groom sat quietly, food was served to all even before
the commencement of the proceedings of the brideprice. All ate and drank in
full merriment. In other marriages I have been to, the payment of the
brideprice was done first before refreshment.
In time the
event took off. The spokesperson for the bride’s family welcomed the guest and
presented kola and drinks. However, the father of the groom( I suppose), was
not familiar with the custom. For a moment, he didn’t know what to do with the
kola until he was promptly directed, he
then offered prayer. It was the turn of the groom’s family to present theirs. But
before accepting the offer, they had to
explain the reason for the ‘supposed visit’. Without mincing words, the
spokesperson for the groom’s family
poetically described the reason
for their visit, thus comparing the bride to a beautiful flower they found
around the compound.
Later, the spokesperson for the bride brought out
the marriage list to ensure strict compliance to the requirement. Unfortunately,
the groom defaulted in certain areas. Therefore,
proceedings were stopped for a long time, only to resume again after much
dialogue.
It was now time to unveil the bride, who was
gorgeously dressed to the cheerful amazement and admiration of all. The bride
was then asked if she would accept the groom as husband. She gave an
enthusiastic yes. Thereafter, the event shifted outside where the guest had
been waiting patiently for a long time.
